This class is a mixture of asana (postures), mindfulness meditation and breathwork. The class is an hour and a half long and is about a third sitting, a third laying down, and about a third standing. This yoga program was designed specifically to help practitioners build connectedness, body awareness, regulate emotion and impulses, reduce stress and anxiety.
We hold each asana for a few slow deep rhythmic breaths so we may build long term muscle memory. Throughout the practice are segments of slow flow where we mix movement, breath and asana. This allows us to deepen our practice, and keeps you completely present, slowing or stopping mind chatter, and producing a sense of calm and well being. Your body’s natural biochemistry responds to this type of activity by releasing your feel good hormones such as dopamine, endorphins, oxytocin and serotonin. We also learn to change the bodies natural fight or flight response. We learn to deal with stress, without releasing cortisol, adrenaline and other damaging biochemicals that only lead to more stress, anxiety and illness.
This practice lends itself to getting in touch with the way your inner body responds emotionally, physically and mentally to outside stimulus from your five senses. This develops a deep a sense of awareness which leads to building your intuition. Once developed, you will move more naturally toward those things that are good for you, and away from those things that are not.
Each class is taught with full instruction for each asana each time. You do not need to know anything in advance. The goal is to develop a strong foundation to build on and to progress at your own pace. Our focus is on health and longevity, and to avoid injury or strain from trying to progress too quickly. As the practitioner advances, they add in more advanced postures.
